The Texan instrumental trio, EMP, composed of the adept musicians Alex Erhardt, Nathan Mays, and Maxx Salazar, is on the brink of unleashing their highly anticipated EP, “Empulsive,” scheduled for release today.
Distinguished by their sophisticated and eclectic musical approach, EMP masterfully amalgamates various genres, including progressive rock, jazz, post-punk, and electronic elements, resulting in a sound that transcends conventional boundaries. What sets EMP apart is their audacious inclusion of the vibraphone, a bold deviation from the musical mainstream that underlines their commitment to innovation and sonic exploration.
Since securing a deal with Geodesic Records in 2022, “Empulsive” marks EMP’s inaugural full-length venture into the music industry. The EP serves as a testament to the trio’s diverse musical backgrounds, showcasing a dynamic fusion of punk, heavy metal, and the upright bass in rock and roll. This amalgamation of influences not only underscores their versatility but also positions EMP as pioneers, consistently producing innovative and groundbreaking compositions that defy genre limitations.
The inaugural track, “Tryst Issues,” encapsulates a dynamic interplay between the vibraphone, rhythmic electric guitar, and lively percussive elements, setting the stage for an EP promising a captivating auditory journey. Following suit, “Four on the Flores” maintains the momentum with its luminous and forward-looking atmosphere, incorporating electro-pop elements and synth chords that add a futuristic dimension to the sonic landscape.
“Dr. Fillgrave” further demonstrates EMP’s prowess with its playful and jazzy character, wherein the vibraphone takes center stage. The deliberate inclusion of dissonant chords introduces an element of tension and unpredictability, captivating listeners throughout the piece. All tracks on “Empulsive” are both penned and performed by EMP, showcasing their artistic autonomy. Exceptions include “African Flower” (written by Duke Ellington / Temp Music) and “Song of Storms” (written by Koji Kondo / Nintendo of America). The EP’s meticulous production, overseen by aCr & EMP, with mixing and mastering expertly handled by aCr, attests to their unwavering commitment to sonic excellence.
