DJENTRIFIED CONFRONTS THE COST OF DESENSITIZATION WITH “WELCOME TO THE ABYSS”

Southern California’s Djentrified, the solo project of Cousteau, has unveiled the official music video for “Welcome to the Abyss.” It’s a visceral, unflinching piece that examines humanity’s growing numbness to violence and the urgent need to rediscover empathy in a chaotic, corrupt, and desensitized world.

The video places Cousteau in a dimly lit, claustrophobic space — a symbolic “abyss” — where his impassioned performance borders on exorcism. His movements, driven by anguish and fury, are intercut with harrowing real-world footage: 9/11, George Floyd’s murder, the Rodney King beating, the January 6th insurrection, and the Sandy Hook tragedy, among others. These moments, pulled from some of modern history’s darkest chapters, refuse to let the viewer look away. “Welcome to the Abyss” becomes a confrontation — a rejection of apathy and a challenge to reckon with the moral cost of indifference.

Sonically, the track fuses technical mastery with raw emotional weight. It’s as rhythmically punishing as it is cathartic, combining djent precision with the urgency of human grief. Each breakdown lands like a gut punch; each vocal outburst feels like both a scream for help and a declaration of defiance. It’s a song that blurs the line between despair and resilience — where anger, sorrow, and hope coexist in uneasy harmony.

Djentrified is the solo metal project of Cousteau Bix Christopher, blending rhythmically complex aggression with a message rooted in empathy, morality, and resistance. Based in Southern California, Cousteau founded Djentrified to turn heavy music into a weapon of awareness — where breakdowns become battle cries and choruses become calls for change. Influenced by artists like Breakdown of Sanity, Polaris, Brand of Sacrifice, and Fractalize — with early inspiration from Linkin Park and Breaking Benjamin — Djentrified bridges technically demanding djent and deathcore with emotionally charged songwriting. The result is a sound that challenges both musical norms and social complacency.

With “Welcome to the Abyss,” Djentrified continues its mission to confront injustice without succumbing to cynicism. The project stands as a testament to the idea that even in the darkest depths, feeling remains a radical act. To feel is to resist.
