“Rise” hits like a slow motion collision you can’t look away from. From the opening piano chords there is a mournful, searching quality and a reflection of the climate despair so many of us can feel.

Eliphaz Costus, the mind behind Revvnant, calls it a “slow-motion car crash”. It’s horrifying, hypnotic and strangely beautiful all at once. And it’s “Rise” that carries that tension through layers of rage, despair and fleeting hope, echoing the emotions we feel as we watch the world unravel.

The visualizer to accompany the track was created by Morgan Beringer Studio, which has been BAFTA nominated for its video art and post production work. This video mirrors the tension in “Rise” perfectly.

Lush, almost fantastical depictions of healthy nature collide with stark images of destruction and decay, melting and warping in a psychedlic style that is both mesmerising and unsettling. It’s the perfect companion to the music which is haunting and impossible to ignore.

The instrumentation is meticulous and alive. Schutzman (formerly the drummer for The Flying Eyes and Black Lung), has moved beyond percussion in Revvnant, embracing analog synthesizers, Mellotron, Moog, drum programming and vocals.

His music takes inspiration from trip hop, dream pop, industrial and doom refusing to be pinned down to one single genre.

While a solo project at its core, Revvnant often expands into a collective including contributors like Kit Whitacre (bass and guitars) and Danah Denice (backing vocals) on this track. J. Robbins recorded the vocals and mixed the track at Magpie Cage Studio while the majority of the production took place in Schutzman’s home studio which lends the track a hands-on feel.

“Rise” is also the first glimpse of what’s to come on Revvnant’s upcoming album Death Drive. Written over several years across Berlin, Ireland and Baltimore, the album explores political and personal turbulence – from climate anxiety in “Rise” to the fallout of war in the Middle East in “Damascus”, the rise of fascism in “Horror” and the awe and power of mountains in “Into the Grey”.

While Schutzman wrote and produced nearly all of the album himself, Death Drive features a host of collaborators on guitars, bass, drums, keys, backing vocals and pedal steel, with vocals recorded and mixed by J. Robbins at Magpie Cage Studio and mastered by Paul Logus at PLX Mastering.

“Rise” is a compelling introduction to the album’s world – emotionally intense, visually striking and expansive in sound. This is music that demands attention and reflection. A darkly beautiful invitiation into Revvnant’s world where despair, awe and hope collide.

Revvnant is the singular vision of Eliphaz Costus, a multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter and working member of The Satanic Temple. Melding dream pop, trip-hop, industrial and doom, Revvnant thrives in the spaces between genres, creating music that is dark and immersive.

The project first took flight with a sold out support show for Orville Peck in 2019, followed by European performances in Berlin, Dresden and Basel. During the pandemic, Revvnant released the EPs VV and Unknown EP, steadily building a devoted underground following. The project made its festival debut at Freak Valley Festival 2022, sharing the stage with Black Mountain, High On Fire, and Red Fang.

Now in 2025, Revvnant is preparing to release his debut full length album, Death Drive this September.
