Hide and Shine Release “9 Seconds Before Revolution”, Their Most Ambitious Album Yet

There are bands who sit down with a guitar, a notebook and a vague idea of what they want to write about. And there are bands who carefully construct songs around a concept, a lyric, a riff or a particularly good cup of coffee. And then there is Hide and Shine, the Kingston, NY indie rock outfit whose songwriting process apparently begins somewhere considerably further outside the building.

The band’s third album, 9 Seconds Before Revolution, released August 26, is the latest product of a creative process that sounds less like conventional songwriting and more like receiving transmissions from somewhere you probably shouldn’t have a phone number for.

It began in 2020, when Chris Kelly, the band’s NYC indie-rock mainstay, experienced what he describes as a “psychic download” of around 50 songs. Rather than questioning the sanity of the universe, Kelly recorded rough sketches and took them to drummer and producer Michael Chambers. The material eventually became Soft Machines, the band’s debut double album, with the late Steve Albini helping shape the recordings. If that sounds like an unusual way to start a band, Hide and Shine clearly saw no reason to become more conventional with age. Continue reading

School for the Blind: Where a Legend Learns to Listen

Ken Lovern’s third single from Blind Boone the Musical explores the place where extraordinary talent begins to find its voice.

Talent is rarely born fully formed. It arrives quietly, sometimes before we have the language to understand it. A child discovers an instrument, a sound, a rhythm that feels somehow instinctive. Someone notices. A teacher listens. A door opens. What happens next can change the course of a life.

For John William “Blind” Boone, one of America’s great musical pioneers, that door was the Missouri School for the Blind.

It is here that “School for the Blind,” the third single from Kansas City composer and jazz organist Ken Lovern’s Blind Boone the Musical, takes us. After the journey towards freedom explored in “Quindaro,” the story moves inward. The landscape changes from roads and rivers to classrooms and instruments, from survival to discovery. Boone is still a boy, but the extraordinary musician he will become is beginning to emerge. Continue reading

George Collins Lets the Light In with “Happiness Looks Good on You”

For much of his songwriting career, George Collins has built a reputation on honesty. His songs have never shied away from life’s complexities, and they often explore memory, change and the bittersweet realities that come with growing older. Yet with “Happiness Looks Good on You,” Collins makes a conscious shift – not by abandoning those themes, but by choosing to focus on what comes after them.

This is a song about survival. It celebrates the strength it takes to emerge from difficult times with a renewed sense of purpose, carrying the scars without letting them define the future. It is an optimistic outlook that feels genuine because Collins never asks listeners to ignore hardship. He simply reminds us that joy is often the reward for enduring it. Continue reading

Mick Eddy Finds the Sweet Spot Between Nostalgia and New Beginnings on “Hey Julia”

Mick Eddy returns with another catchy standout tune, reminding us that sometimes the most memorable songs are built on the simplest emotions. His latest single, “Hey Julia,” captures the unmistakable excitement of meeting someone who instantly changes the course of your day – and perhaps your life!

It’s a feeling that has inspired countless songs over the decades, but Eddy approaches it with an easy confidence that feels refreshing rather than predictable. Instead of relying on overblown declarations of love, “Hey Julia” thrives on anticipation. It celebrates the butterflies, the hopeful glances and the quiet optimism that come before a relationship has even begun. Continue reading

Mark Duffy Dreams in Sound on the Soulful, Expansive “Dream On Dreamer”

While a casual listen might suggest that Mark Duffy’s “Dream On Dreamer” is simply another beautifully weathered piece of roots-rock, built from familiar ingredients of blues, classic rock and songwriting, spend a little more time with it and a much richer picture begins to emerge. This is not just a song built on guitar, groove and emotion – although it has all of those qualities in abundance. It is a carefully constructed piece of musical storytelling where landscape, memory, instinct and human connection all find their way into the same space.

On the surface, the appeal is immediate. There is a warmth and honesty , with the guitars carrying that lived in quality that comes from years of playing. The rhythm section moves with a natural confidence, creating the feeling of musicians responding to one another in real time. It has the looseness and danger of a great live performance, that sense that something could shift at any moment. Continue reading

Zoey Madison Finds Her Voice in Full Color on “Love Like You”

There is something really quite timeless about a great piano ballad. In a music landscape most often built around instant song hooks and fleeting moments, a beautifully written song with a powerful vocal performance can still create the kind of connection that trends cannot manufacture.

With love like you, New York based artist Zoey Madison embraces that tradition, and delivers a heartfelt and beautifully arranged pop ballad that shows off both her vocal prowess and her skill for songwriting. Continue reading

Faith Meets Fragility on Grace Frances’s Debut Single “Again”

There’s a moment in “Again” where everything feels suspended: the piano, the voice and the sense of emotional gravity. Like the song is waiting to see whether it will collapse inward or hold its shape. Within that tension, Grace Frances finds her footing and builds a moving debut.

On paper, the elements are simple: piano-led production, sparse cinematic textures and vocals that stay deliberately close to the skin. But what Frances does with these elements feels intentional in a way that goes beyond minimalism. Working with producer Eddy Beethoven, she constructs a track that treats silence as an active presence rather than an absence. The spaces between phrases feel charged, as if the song is thinking as much as it is speaking. Continue reading

Wayward Sparrow Gives “Devil By My Side” a Haunting Visual Companion

A title track has a job to do. It has to carry the name of the entire record, distil its themes and convince the listener that everything else belongs beneath its banner. That’s no small task, but “Devil By My Side” does wear this responsibility. As the centrepiece of Wayward Sparrow’s debut album, it introduces the darkness, humanity and understated storytelling that Rich Clark has been quietly building towards for years.

It opens the door to a bleak and uncomfortable landscape where addiction, self-destruction and the erosion of control play out with honesty. Now, with the release of its official music video, that world becomes even more vivid. Continue reading
