Today, Mike Cykoski, the creative mind behind A Is for Atom, releases his new single Enola, a track that fuses personal history, cultural critique and political reflection into a striking sonic landscape.
Built from the fallout, literally and metaphorically, of this last year, this song layers lush indie rock textures and expressive electronic beats to create an urgent message.
Listen in here:
Drawing on imagery from the Atomic Age, Enola moves through moments of youth, recklessness, and belief, juxtaposed against the slow recognition that nothing remains untouched. From cruising College Avenue in Fort Collins to the ritualized guilt of Catholic school, “Enola” captures snapshots of life in a country that feels increasingly unstable and hugely volatile.
Its tension between nostalgia and dread, freedom and consequence, gives “Enola” a haunting frequency while Mike’s baritone vocals anchor the sprawling and multi textured bridges and choruses.
The song’s title nods to the Enola Gay, which was was the B-29 Superfortress bomber that dropped the first atomic bomb “Little Boy” on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6th 1945, marking the first time a nuclear weapon was used in warfare. This imagery evokes mid-century mythmaking, but Mike reframes history. Faith becomes “holy tragedy,” youth becomes fallout and identity fractures into half lives that never fully decay.
Enola is loud and restless in sound. Almost like a love letter written in warning signs, questioning what it means to grow up inside something powerful enough to shape you and dangerous enough to destroy you.
