There’s something truly refreshing about “Palomino,” the latest single from guitarist and composer Todd Mosby. Where much of indie music is leaning into lo-fi grit, Mosby is taking a different path – one paved with rhythm, colour and a sense of movement that is cinematic in essence.
Taken from his forthcoming album American Heartland, “Palomino” has a sense of buoyancy that is hard to resist. Built around a brisk samba groove and a galloping bossa nova pulse, this song glides forward with effortless charm. Mosby’s electric guitar dances lightly across the arrangement, threading melodic phrases that feel playful yet precise.
What gives the song its emotional lift, however, is the vocal presence of Lola Kristine. Her voice rises easily above the rhythmic current, adding warmth and a hint of dreamlike nostalgia that perfectly complements the song’s backstory. “Palomino” was inspired by Mosby’s childhood memories of learning to ride horses on his family’s farm.
There’s a clear nod to the breezy elegance of Brazilian samba tradition in the song’s rhythmic DNA, but Mosby keeps things interesting by slipping in subtle harmonic shifts and melodic detours. It’s these unexpected turns that prevent the song from drifting into easy listening territory and gives it more indie leaning edge.
Longtime listeners of Mosby will be familiar with his ongoing fascination with storytelling through place and memory. And while American Heartland promises to explore the landscapes and cultural identity of the American Midwest, this particular track zooms in on something more personal: a formative childhood moment, translated into rhythm and melody.
At a time when genre lines blend more than ever before, “Palomino” is refreshing as it sits somewhere between jazz, world music and indie instrumental pop. It’s polished and thoughtful without becoming heavy. Most importantly, it’s simply enjoyable.
With upcoming record American Heartland following the same path, Todd Mosby may well have crafted one of the year’s most quietly uplifting instrumental releases. It’s one that proves subtle storytelling and musical craftsmanship can still feel fresh in today’s indie landscape.
