For Mick Eddy, “What I’m Looking For” is more than a new single. It is where everything began.

The multi-instrumentalist, producer, and engineer is premiering the song today, offering listeners a first look at the music that set him on the path toward his forthcoming debut album, Strange Weather. Now attending Berklee College of Music, Eddy has developed a sound shaped by a multicultural upbringing across six countries and a hands-on approach to making music. He writes, produces, performs, and engineers his own material, combining live instrumentation with modern production and songwriting.

“What I’m Looking for” was the first complete song Eddy ever wrote, giving the track a significance that goes beyond its place in his growing catalog. Written around the frustration and confusion of miscommunication in a relationship, the song centers on the feeling of knowing exactly what you want while the person in front of you somehow still cannot see it.

“It’s about that frustration when the answer is standing right in front of someone and they keep asking the question anyway. You keep asking me what I’m looking for, and I keep thinking, it’s you. It’s been you this whole time.”

That directness carries through the song’s writing. Rather than overcomplicating the story, Eddy keeps the focus on the emotional tension between two people who seem to be talking past each other. The narrator is frustrated, but not ready to leave. There is still a desire to make the relationship work, even when communication has broken down.

Musically, Eddy knew from the beginning that he wanted the song to be driven by guitar and bass. The result reflects his instinct for combining live instrumentation with a contemporary production sensibility, while keeping the arrangement relatively simple.

“I knew I wanted it to be guitar and bass driven, something with that indie rock energy where the instruments push the song forward as much as the vocals do.”

The track also marked Eddy’s first experience putting lyrics to music and completing an entire song. With no established songwriting formula to follow, he approached the process as an opportunity to experiment and begin figuring out what his own sound might become. His friend KJ also played a role in the process, helping Eddy step outside his tendency to overcomplicate his ideas.

That early experimentation ultimately became an important foundation for Strange Weather, a debut album that explores distance, love, and self-discovery through an immersive, cinematic soundscape. Across the album, Eddy’s background as a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and engineer allows him to approach the music from multiple angles, building each piece himself rather than separating the songwriting, performance, and production processes.

For Eddy, sharing “What I’m Looking For” now is also a way of returning to the beginning before moving forward.

“This song is where it all started for me. So as I get close to releasing my debut album, it felt important to share the very first thing I ever wrote, a way of closing the loop before I dive headfirst into this world.”

With “What I’m Looking For,” listeners get to hear the starting point of an artist still discovering his voice, but already drawn to the same themes that would come to define his larger body of work: connection, uncertainty, communication, and the complicated space between wanting something and knowing how to ask for it.
