Not every album needs to arrive with a sense of occasion. Some slip in quietly less like a statement and more like something unfolding in real time, already in motion before you fully notice it. Out of the Blue, which is the new record from A Is for Atom, works in that register: patient, unhurried and more interested in atmosphere and feeling than impact for its own sake.
At the centre of it all is Mike Cykoski, working with a clear sense of perspective and confidence.
The opening track, “Babylon”, provides a moment that gestures towards a broader sense of disorder – cultural, social and emotional – but even here it’s less about depicting chaos and more about sitting inside it, trying to make sense of what remains when everything around us is so unstable.
The title track of the album captures this sense of perspective well. It deals with the slow, almost unspoken shift in a lifelong friendship as it edges into something more complicated. But rather than framing it as a dramatic turning point, it treats it more like an observation and something you notice after it has already happened. That sense of delay, of realisation catching up with experience, runs throughout much of the record.
“Closer” is less about romance and more about effort; the idea that connection is something maintained rather than assumed. “Love Birds” leans into fragility, and focuses on the delicate balance between proximity and distance, the way relationships are constantly adjusting themselves in real time.
Elsewhere, “Upriver” introduces a more mythic tone, almost as a framing device rather than a narrative shift. The journey it describes isn’t just physical or symbolic – it’s internal, reflective of how people move through time, memory and responsibility without ever fully arriving anywhere fixed.
Musically, the record is deliberately unshowy. Indie rock provides the foundation, but it’s softened and stretched by electronic textures and understated production choices. The musical elements drift in and out of focus, guitars shimmer and rhythms glide rather than drive, atmospheres that accumulate rather than outright declare themselves.
Overall, the tone never becomes repetitive which is what makes this record notable. And it’s very much interested in reflection of the current world and what we are dealing with globally speaking. A is For Atom allows meaning to emerge gradually rather than outright stating something.
And this is, ultimately, how the album becomes something more enduring, offering not answers but perspective.
