A title track has a job to do. It has to carry the name of the entire record, distil its themes and convince the listener that everything else belongs beneath its banner. That’s no small task, but “Devil By My Side” does wear this responsibility. As the centrepiece of Wayward Sparrow’s debut album, it introduces the darkness, humanity and understated storytelling that Rich Clark has been quietly building towards for years.
It opens the door to a bleak and uncomfortable landscape where addiction, self-destruction and the erosion of control play out with honesty. Now, with the release of its official music video, that world becomes even more vivid.
Wayward Sparrow is the independent project of Detroit songwriter Rich Clark, whose move from heavy metal into Americana and folk has been driven by one simple idea: that a voice, an acoustic guitar and a compelling story are often all a song really needs. Across the recently released album Devil By My Side, Clark leans into that philosophy.
The song explores addiction, but not from the perspective of confession. Clark has made it clear that Devil By My Side is not autobiographical. Instead, it inhabits a fictional character whose life has become consumed by desperation, poor decisions and the inability, or unwillingness to escape destructive behaviour. It is storytelling in the truest sense, and asks the listener to step inside someone else’s experience without ever romanticising it.
The accompanying video expands on this. Rather than treating the visuals as an opportunity for cinematic excess, they remain faithful to the mood established by the song itself. Shadows, isolation and the imagery mirror the lyrics, creating something that feels less like a performance piece and more like a continuation of the story.
This subtlety has become something of a defining characteristic for Wayward Sparrow. Clark’s songwriting has always been built around suggestion rather than certainty. He trusts listeners to find their own way through the stories, and the video follows the same principle. It complements the music and lets the atmosphere be the prominent force.
Musically, Devil By My Side continues the aesthetic established across the album. Acoustic guitar forms the backbone of the arrangement, while subtle layers. Every musical decision serves the narrative, creating space for the lyrics to remain the emotional centre of the piece.
That commitment to authenticity extends beyond the songwriting. Every track on Devil By My Side was self-recorded and self-produced by Clark, who chose years ago to invest his time in learning the recording process rather than relying on commercial studios. Small imperfections remain, performances retain their character, and the songs never lose sight of the emotions they were written to convey.
Clark has spoken openly about the significance of this record, describing it as the album he had wanted to make for years but never previously felt ready to release. Listening to the title track, it becomes clear why it occupies such an important place within the project. It captures everything Wayward Sparrow has become with its thoughtful songwriting, understated arrangements and in its unwavering belief that stories deserve room to unravel naturally.
In a time when so much visual content fights for our attention through speed, Devil By My Side succeeds by doing the opposite. It remains patient, measured, quietly affecting, and proves that sometimes the strongest stories are the ones willing to sit with difficult truths rather than trying to resolve them.

About Wayward Sparrow
Wayward Sparrow is the independent music project of Detroit based songwriter Rich Clark. The project grew out of a long musical path that began in heavy metal before gradually shifting toward country, folk and Americana – genres that all place a greater emphasis on storytelling and clarity.
That shift in listening and influence eventually shaped a more stripped back creative approach with vocals, acoustic guitar and space left intentionally open. Rather than aiming for heavy production or layered arrangements, Wayward Sparrow focuses on songs that are direct and unforced, where the writing and performance are allowed to sit at the centre.
All music under the Wayward Sparrow name is self-recorded and self-produced. Clark’s approach prioritises learning the recording process firsthand and allowing songs to evolve naturally as they are being built, rather than adhering to a fixed studio template. Here, small imperfections and changes in direction often become part of the final character of the work.
